Fishing enthusiasts will descend on Smith Mountain Lake this weekend to take part in the Blue Ridge Big Bass Classic, part of Oakley’s Big Bass Tour. Local news source The Laker Weekly reports more than 500 competitors are expected to participate. Prizes include a $30,000 bass boat, $1,000 for first and cash amounts for several lower place winners. The tournament, in its third year at Smith Mountain Lake, will open this Friday and take place through Sunday.
The Big Bass Classic is just one of several major fishing tournaments to choose Smith Mountain Lake as a stop in the larger series. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has done an outstanding job of cultivating healthy fish species and habitats in the lake, particularly with bass. Smith Mountain Lake is known as one of the top striped bass fisheries on the east coast. Good luck to this weekend’s anglers and if you’re looking for a beautiful, challenging lake to fish we would love to host you here at Smith Mountain Lake.
