What To Do About Watercraft at Smith Mountain Lake

885969_98959450This weekend, thousands of locals and tourists will venture out on Smith Mountain Lake for the first time this year. Like most other places, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to the most fun in the sun one can have in a three month span. As we have in summers past, we will be providing you with tips to enjoy the lake smartly and safely. We hope this summer is your best yet at SML!

If you plan to get on the water but don’t have your own boat or PWC to do it, plan to rent watercraft well ahead of time – particularly for a holiday or weekend. You’ll want to stop by a local marina to ask staff about the laws of the water, safety needs and what kind of boat will suit you and your family best. Be aware that Virginia’s watercraft laws have changed in recent years so this is vital. Most boat drivers are now required to have had some level of training before getting behind the wheel. See the latest Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Guide for more detailed information, or visit the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend, we can’t wait to share our beautiful and exciting lake with you!
